Mason City

We decided to drive at least part way through northern Iowa on Highway 18. So last night we were in Mason City – the inspiration for River City in The Music Man. We were too late to visit Music Man Square but we did visit the Historic Park Inn

The hotel, completed in 1910, is the last Wright designed hotel in the world!

We both love the Prairie Style and this place was wonderful – the building, the windows, and the furnishings!

The carpets were gorgeous!

After touring the hotel, we took a walk and saw some of the 26 sculptures that are displayed around town. Tickled was done by Louise Peterson of Guffey, Colorado with a price of $25,000.

We enjoyed dinner at our motel – an all-you-can-eat pasta bar. This was new to us and really good! We chose our ingredients and then told the chef our choice of rotini or linguini, and marinara or Alfredo sauce. He then prepared our dish and brought it to our table.

Rotini with marinara sauce, shrimp, tomatoes, black olives, garlic and cumin - good!
We also had salad and breadsticks. The chef said they have had the pasta bar on Thursday nights for about 6 years!

I had planned to have some linguini with Alfredo sauce for my second helping but the first helping was more than enough!

  1. I didn't know that Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotels.

Hmmm ... create your own pasta ... sounds yummy and fun!

  2. Now I'm singing the 'River City' song in my head. I just love the music from The Music Man. Wish I could have seen all those featherweights in your last post. Oh my. Probably all out of my price range.
