I am not making a quilt but I am practicing and doing each type of free motion quilting.
The four blocks for row 2 use straight stitching.
The current four blocks for row 3 use landscapes and seascapes. I used some patterned fabric so it's not as easy to see - sorry about that!
First is Landscape 1 - hills.
The hills are supposed to be filled in with more stitching like in the next photo. I prefer the open hills above.
Next is Seascape 1 or Ocean Current. Basically this is connected hooks or 'spirals' that have echo stitching.
Landscape 2 is leaves. This was almost easy and looks so much better than the leaves I did for the Free Motion Quilting Challenge in January.
And the last one is Seascape 2 or Sea Oats. This one gave me fits! First I tried to draw them - I don't even know what sea oats are!
Then I tried to sew them on this practice sandwich - ugh!
I went back to the drawing board and ended up with corn stalks - that's something I understand!

Hehe! Love your cornstalks....that is something I, too, can relate to a lot better than sea oats. The leaves are great and something that is in my "go to" patterns of FMQ! Relaxing for some reason. The hooked swirls are very nice, too. Haven't done those..yet. QAYG has it's place but it isn't any quicker just different. Years ago Georgia Bonesteel introduced "Lap Quilting" (hand quilting) as a portable alternative to quilting the whole quilt at one time. I never did it then (even though I did buy her books on the technique). Off to work on my current quilt top. Hugs, Doreen

ReplyDeleteOh gosh, you can't relate to sea oats. How sad. I fo like the corn stalks though. We always do better with what we know.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see what you were thinking while doing these designs - really helped me think it thru too. Although I don't know sea oats or cornstalks! They were fun designs to do though, weren't they?
