2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge August Update

This month at the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge, over at Insights by SewCal Gal, Wendy Sheppard is our expert. She does beautiful work!

Wendy gave us a "simple but fun quilting motif" called Jester's Hat. Well, first I tried to draw the design. Then I tried to draw the design by copying the website drawing. Oh, this gave my very left-brain brain fits! I was drawing the design in the air when I woke up, on the shower wall, on my church bulletin... My sketch book has pages devoted to this "simple but fun quilting motif"!

Today, after church, I was ready! I decided to sew on a square that will eventually become part of  a QAYG quilt. I had to stop stitching often to think about where to go next. But it worked! I do like the texture this design gives and with practice (maybe lots of practice) I think I could do a whole quilt!

Thanks Wendy! Using one's brain is good!

Problems:
All of that thinking! I also had some trouble with my machine speed which you may notice in my stitches - I can't wait to get a machine with a start button so I don't have to rely on my nerve damaged foot!

  1. It looks like a fun design to do. Here we are the 8th mont in the Free Motion Challenge, and I thought, how is the next one going to be different than the last 7. It amazes me there are soooo many FM designs! Can't wait to try it.

  2. This one looked to be a "mind challenge"....simple/interesting to look at and a bit difficult to execute without much sketching before hand! Great work! I seem to fall in love with each new motif I am presented with! Hugs, D

  7. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one obsessed with these...drawing and doodling and thinking about the motions. I like your idea of stopping so you can continue on. I will take your advice!

  9. Drawing quilting patterns in your church bulletin during the sermon, hmmm??? ;-) That made me smile. I was practicing drawing the jester hats in the waiting room at the doctor's office. Your hats look good, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who had trouble figuring out "where do I go next?!"

  11. Me siento aliviada al ver que no soy la única que dibuja mientras duerme y necesita parar para saber hacia donde voy. Buen trabajo.
