The flannel quilts are finished!

You may remember that at the March quilting retreat, Krista gave me some flannel for donation quilts. (A friend gave her the flannel for me.) There were eight pieces—enough for nine quilts. I paired them with cottons from my stash and eventually bought a few blender fabrics to go with them.

Flannel #1 (blue with white sports) is 50" square. The blue cotton fabric is from my stash as is the backing.

I quilted this with spirals. It's one of the things I have trouble quilting so I thought I'd get some practice. I also put four-leaf clovers in the corners where the square joined. 

The back is blue cloud print. This quilt is very soft and cuddly.

Flannel #4 (green giraffes with white dot and green) began with a large piece of fabric. I didn't want a quilt with just one fabric used for both the front and back, so I made two quilts. I decided the print was quite cute, so I just added two borders to it - white with green dots and green. 

The green back is monochromatic. The borders and the backing are from my stash.

Flannel #5 (green giraffes with yellow and green) is 42" by 46". Again I decided to not cut the cute fabric and just add borders. This quilt is just a little larger than #4. 

I bought the yellow border fabric and the backing, a green with blue dots.

Flannel #6 (blue flower bricks with yellow) is 46" by 49". The yellow fabric from my stash dictated the size of this quilt. I used all of it. 

I've been wanting to quilt a figure 8 that overlapped rows - it worked great here where I could imagine a grid. The figure 8 is really enlarged and looks more like a loop de loop.

The backing, yellow with flowers, was purchased. I had enough of the blue binding fabric (from my stash) to use for part of the back.

Flannel #8 (pink flowers with yellow) is a 44" square. The yellow sashing is from my stash as is the binding. I didn't have enough of the sashing yellow for the binding, but I found another yellow in my stash.

I wasn't sure how I wanted to quilt this quilt but decided on daisies since there were daisies in the top. 

I bought the pink print for the back of this quilt and connected the pieces with the leftover yellow from #5 quilt.

Flannel #9 (rail fence blue/pink/purple) is 48" by 60".  I used a 3-yard pattern that used 9" by 12" blocks. The strips in the two blocks needed are different widths - the strips in one direction are 1" narrower than the strips in the other direction. I bought all the coordinating fabrics to go with this flannel piece including the blue for the backing.

I have a small pile of quilts to bind (4), a large pile to quilt(12), and a few in progress(13). It's almost like an assembly line some days but I love it. I said I had 24 donation quilts done last time but it was only 23 donation quilts. Now the correct number of finished donation quilts is 29! I love that I am moving fabric out of my stash. (Most, if not all of the fabrics I bought will be used  with little left over.) 

Flannel Quilt Series Finishes

At the March quilting retreat, K gifted me some flannel to use in donation quilts. One of her friends received this flannel from someone and K thought I would use it. There are 8 pieces, enough for 9 quilts. Eight of the tops are finished. I need additional fabric for the ninth. Three of the eight tops are now quilted and bound! So far, everything I've used is from my stash.

I numbered the quilts for identification and I'm evidently not finishing them in order. 

Flannel #2 (flannel daisies with blue dot cotton) finished at 42" by 50". The size of this quilt was definitely affected by the amount of blue dot fabric that I had.  

I quilted a lazy eight or wishbone, on the blue dot pieces and meandering on the daisy flannel. 

The back is a blue cotton.

Flannel #3 (pink, purple, and teal) finished at 43" by 45". I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do with this piece - I really didn't want to cut it up. I finally left it as one piece of fabric and just quilted it. 

I used wavy lines, straight lines, lazy eights, and string of loops motifs for the quilting.

The back is turquoise recently leftover backing from another quilt.

Flannel #7 (blue perfume girl with yellow gold cotton) finished at 43" by 43". I cut this flannel in large squares so I could use all of it. 

The fabric is cute - you can almost smell the perfume. While I was making this, I might have referred to it, lovingly, as Stinky Girl.

The back is pink. You can really see the quilting on the back - the motif is string of loops.

Most of the flannel quilts are smaller than I usually make due to the fabric available. They will be used for infants so the size will be fine. I love the flannel - it feels and looks so nice and soft!

We'll be doing a little traveling in a few weeks and I might be able to finish a binding or two. There is a pile of quilts needing the binding hand sewn. A few more finishes will put me halfway to that 40 donation quilt goal. Twenty is my normal number of donations for the last few years. I will definitely meet that.

Lots of quilting with one finish to share

I've been doing a lot of quilting but only have one finish to show. There are a couple of others but they are gifts so I'll wait to share them.

The finish is the second Simply Squares Series Quilt, Turquoise with Yellow.

The Simply Square Series Quilts are all donation quilts. I'm hoping they will make a dent in my stash while allowing me to have more quilts to donate.

The back is a turquoise print with lots of color shapes while the binding is a navy blue.

I spent last weekend on retreat with friends. We had a great time as usual and were all glad to make it home before the blizzard hit Sunday night! 

I finished a few quilt tops during the retreat. The first top is a Simply Squares Quilt, Red with Navy Polka Dot. The navy is not as dark as the photo appears.

I also put together Simply Squares Quilt, Red with Navy print. Again, the navy is not as dark as it appears.

This Take Five Quilt will also be a donation. It's been years since I last used this pattern.

Another donation quilt is this Double Irish Chain.

While at the retreat, K gifted me some flannel to use in donation quilts. One of her friends received this flannel from someone and K thought I would use it. I'll try!

Yes, there are 8 good sized pieces and none of them go together! I'm trying to match up cottons from my stash with each flannel.

When I finished the last gift quilt today, I decided to use the sports flannel print from the first photo of flannels above, and make Flannel Quilt Series - Blue with Sports Print.

The blue is cotton from my stash.

When I stated the Simply Square Series, I envisioned 3 or 4 quilts. I think there will be more. And now there is a Flannel Quilt Series. I think I need more hours each day to quilt!

Health Update: We are both doing pretty good!
