Christmas Tree Skirt - done!

I bought a pattern for a Christmas tree skirt at the Wisconsin Quilt Expo a year ago. I purchased the fabric while we were traveling further north, began cutting pieces when we got home, and then life got in the way. One day about three months ago, I wondered out loud what project I should be working on and Ray suggested the tree skirt.

All of the pieces are machine-appliqued onto a black background.

Then each wedge is machine quilted - yes, I had to learn something about free-motion quilting to finish this! I'm not very good at it yet! I'll always love hand-quilting - no surprise!

The pattern instructions aren't the best. If I were to make this again (which I'm not going to do!), it would be so much better! Oh, the wedges are about 24" long so the skirt is about 4' 6" in diameter. And Ray loves it!

A couple of short trips and an exciting night!

October 9-11 we were in Champaign because Ray had a meeting. We had a wonderful meal at The Ribeye, I'd definitely recommend that place!

October 15 we were at Buck's Barn in Thomson at the Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame dinner. It was exciting to be reunited with the 1999 Warren High School Volleyball team that went to the State. The team was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ray was an assistant coach.

I think four girls were missing. This is quite an accomplished  group of young women!

October 17-19 we were in LaCrosse. We were celebrating my birthday and  also working on my traveling (I'm doing better.) We stayed at the Stoney Creek Inn and our king room was upgraded to this - a king with a bunk bed and a sofa bed!

We stopped at quilt shops! No surprise!

The White Rose Quilt & Stitch in Dodgeville was nice. It is also a florist shop and had neat little gifts.

Quilt Basket N Creations in Viroqua is a wonderful shop with a nice variety of fabrics. The ladies are very friendly and helpful.

Olive Juice Quilts in Onalaska was a pleasant surprise! This used to be called A Stitch In Time and was undergoing some renovation the last time we were there. The addition is done and the place is VERY nice. Their classroom is incredible. The shop is spacious now and the staff very friendly and helpful.

On Tuesday we stopped at the River Road Quilt Shop in LaCrosse. This neat little shop is also a flag and gift shop with a great staff.

Today on the way home we stopped in Prairie du Chein. Front Porch Quilts is only open Thursday - Sunday. The Pickett Fence was open and the ladies were really nice and helpful. This is a nice little shop that also sells candy!

We also spent some time on the campus of UW-LaCrosse, our Alma Mater. There have been many changes since we were last there. The weather was quite cool and windy so our walk about was rather short.

And we ate... One of the ladies at the River Road Quilt Shop suggested Rosie's Cafe for lunch yesterday. Oh yeah - everything is prepared from scratch and it is good

We went back for breakfast this morning!

Last night we ate at Grizzly's - wonderful shrimp grilled over a wood fire.

And now we are home - think I'll take a long walk tomorrow!

Sweet!

We had flowers in the house for weeks after my surgery.
(Ray thought I needed a bright spot.)
During the summer, there were plenty of flowers in the yard.
And today, I have beautiful roses.
Sweet!

People Pillows

Grandchildren are so much fun. One day during the "big visit", the Dads (our two sons) and the six older children (ages 22 months - 7 years) spent the day at our house. I had planned a project that I thought would be fun.

I called the project People Pillows. I got the idea from a blog that referenced here. I made the pillows a little smaller and put a zipper pocket on the back. One side of the pillow is flannel. By using felt shapes, the flannel side becomes a flannel board. The felt face pieces can be stored in the pocket on the back of the pillow. Lots of faces were made! For the two little guys, I appliqued a face on the flannel.

We started by stuffing the pillows.

  Some were VERY serious.

Some questioned what we were doing.

And some were silly!

The second step was to cut out felt pieces for the faces - the Dads helped draw but the kids did ALL of the cutting.

Hard to believe that every piece of felt I own has something cut out of the middle!

I think if you carefully remove these sunglasses, there are blue eyes underneath!

Lots of detail in this one.

A pirate with a pig nose!

I'm sorry we didn't get photos of all of the pillows ~ we were all busy having fun!

Bread and Soup

It was a little cooler today and I decided to cook - something I haven't done much of lately.

I saw a recipe for soup the other day that looked really good. You can see the original at Cinnamon Girl

I could not easily buy sweet potatoes, Cannellini beans, fresh parsley, or fresh thyme. But I figured the soup would still be fine. I did not make the Parmesan dumplings because I didn't think they would freeze well. We will be trying them sometime soon though.

I also made cornbread. The recipe is from Our Best Bites. I have made this before but this time I'll will be freezing some.

Vegetable Soup (with my changes in red - I'm sure the original way is good too! I'll plan ahead next time and get to a bigger grocery store.)
olive oil
2 yellow onions, diced
2 stalks celery, sliced
2 large carrots, sliced into rounds
6 cloves garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
sea or kosher salt and fresh black pepper
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, crushed between fingers
1/3 cup tomato paste
a couple pinches of red pepper flakes
4 large white potatoes, no sweet potatoes
       2 large sweet potatoes, cubed
       2 large white potatoes, cubed
2 medium zucchini, cubed
1 can butter beans, 1 can great northern beans
2 cans (14 ounce) Cannellini beans, rinsed, drained
1½ Tablespoon parsley flakes
       1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon dried thyme
4 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed
6 cups vegetable or chicken broth
2 cups water

*dumplings: I didn’t make these – we used pasta.
1 cup flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt and fresh black pepper
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, fresh grated
1/2 cup milk + 1 tablespoon
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1. In a large soup or stock pot heat enough olive oil to generously cover bottom of pan over medium-low heat; add onion, celery, carrot, garlic and bay leaves. Season well with salt and pepper. Cook until onion is soft, stirring often. Add Italian seasoning, tomato paste and red pepper flakes. Cook additional 3-4 minutes, stirring often.

2. Add potatoes and zucchini, toss with onion mixture and cook 3-4 more minutes, stirring often. Add beans, broth, water, parsley, thyme, 1teaspoon salt, lots of fresh cracked black pepper. Bring to a simmer, cook about 25 minutes, tasting the broth often and seasoning as needed. Remove bay leafs.

3. In a medium bowl whisk sifted flour with baking powder, salt and a couple of cracks of black pepper. Whisk in Parmesan cheese. In a separate small bowl combine milk and oil. Pour over flour mixture and stir until combined. Drop by teaspoonfuls into simmering soup. Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes.

*Instead of dumplings, cook half pound of small macaroni like tubettini. Don't mix the macaroni into the soup (will suck up all the broth). Instead spoon cooked macaroni into bowl and pour soup over top for serving.

CornbreadThis is sweet and cake like.
1 yellow cake mix
2 Jiffy cornbread mixes
Oil, milk, and eggs according to package directions

Preheat oven according to directions on cake mix box. Combine cake mix and cornbread mixes in a large bowl. Add eggs, oil, and milk according to package directions (replace all water with milk). Mix together.

This makes a lot of cornbread - 24 muffins and a pie plate or 12 muffins and a 9X13" pan. Or whatever you want.

Just bake according to cake mix directions (15 - 20 minutes for muffins or 30 minutes for a 9x13 pan") until a toothpick comes out clean.

A Great October - so far!

Saturday, October 1, was a really gorgeous day. Mr. R and I decided to spend most of the day outside. After dropping a carload of electronics off at the Super Recycle Fair, we headed to Galena. It took a while to find a parking spot and then we enjoyed shopping and had lunch at Benjamin's in our favorite window seat - just love to watch the people go by.

We hiked across the river to Oktoberfest. Our goal was to see the Wiener Dog Races. Our neighbor Jack was racing. That's him in the airplane outfit - cute goggles! He undoubtedly had the best outfit in the wiener dog parade!

We sat in the bleachers for almost 2 hours before Jack's heat came up. There were about 120 dogs - all wieners! Anyway Jack decided to race diagonally on the course instead of straight. He came in second and didn't advance. ;(

While we were at the races, our North Carolina son and his family arrived at our other son's home. So we headed that way shortly after Jack was eliminated. We were able to meet our newest granddaughter at last! (Of course, she is adorable!) This week we are enjoying some time with our children and grandchildren.

It's been a great October so far!

A Christmas wallhanging

A while back, I showed you a project. It is now finished. A tiny twister tree. The quilt is about 21 inches wide and 27 inches high.

A friend, Katie, made this and shared it at Quilt Camp. My little squares are 1-1/2 inches whereas Katie's were about 3 inches. So this is about 1/4 the size of her quilt and I like both of them! Mine is done totally from fabric scraps. Oh, I love using just my stash sometimes!
