Sewing Machine Saga continues...

We picked up my sewing machine on our way home from the trip. I finally got to use it and it worked fine. I finished quilting the baby quilt that I was so close to finishing before we left. Then I sat down yesterday and began quilting a pink baby quilt. I was about 1/2 done and would you believe the machine died again!

So it is time. The question is still "What do I buy?". I'm just not sure but it is time to go shopping. I'm so unhappy with my Viking that I'll probably go a different direction. Janome or Bernina???? Oh, I hate this!

  1. My machine (just a simple Janome) just doesn't have the horsepower to stitch nicely (or accurately) through multiple layers (like when I'm nesting seams together in piecing a block). I don't machine quilt, so I don't need anything fancy, but I do need a machine that will allow me to piece easily and accurately. So I'm facing a similar dilemma ... what to buy! I have a feeling that most everything that I look at will be fancier (and more expensive) than I need ... because all I intend to do with my machine is a little repair work, maybe sew an occasional garment but primarily just quilt piecing. I'll be following along with your decision-making process in hopes that I can learn something. Good luck!

  2. Such a dilemma...ugh! I have so many machines cuz they aren't worth anything on a trade. I have been doing a bit of research on machines (some friends are in need of something new, also) and if I were to get something I would go for a Janome Horizon. There are so many of the gals I follow who use that machine and do incredible piecing and quilting (Leah Day for example of just one!!!). Wish you the best!!!!

  3. I think you will get more bang for your buck with a Janome. I would LOVE to own a Bernina, but you need a big harp space for FMQ, and you will pay a small fortune with a Bernina. Even te small ones are expensive!

  4. I just read Doreen's comment, and IF I had the money, I would get a horizon as well. I got the Janome 1600P-QC. I love it. BUT, it only straight stitches. No zigzag or anything. I got a deal at $800 and I can trade up for the full $800 within the year if I wish. I honestly love it...although I wish I at least had a zigzag. But my old machine has many decortive stitches. It still works fine. It just didn't like to FMQ. Just do your homework and test drive them out!!!
